You already familiarity with the mechanics of storytelling, but you may not be accustomed to thinking about your story in terms of those mechanics. You're probably familiar with the three-act structure, conflict, climax, etc., but the struggle is often how do you apply these components into YOUR story?
Great storytelling will fit within the parameters of traditional organization, and by identifying key elements, you'll be able to more easily compose and refine your media story. Follow the three suggestions below to help being the process.
First
- Start with a question, a conflict, or an emotional experience that personally impacts or interests you.
Second
- Address the 5 W's (Who, What, Where, When and Why). Why is the most important of these, because the reason you are telling a particular story is the difference between an fleeting anecdote and a highly-impressionable story.
Third
- Organize these ideas into an outline, and just as you would organize a paper, determine the intro (beginning), body (middle), and conclusion (ending).
From these 3 steps, we will expand the premise of how to prepare your project for a digital media story.
